Course Title:    Leaders Taking Charge (PADM 571)

 

Course Description:

Development of skills and strategies to enhance a local affiliate leader’s ability to make a difference in the personal, professional and association organizations to which they belong.  Various components or foundations of local leadership will be addressed with emphasis placed on essential leadership components of coalition building, communication and engagement of membership to accomplish political action plans. 

Tuition:            $90

 

Requirements:       

 

ü   Complete UAA Online Registration prior to attending April Leadership.  If unable to register online, complete paper registration form at Conference Registration Desk on Friday

ü   If registering online, submit online payment directly to UAA. Submit your $90 tuition at the Conference Registration desk if completing a paper registration.

ü    Sign attendance sheet at each session

(Friday afternoon-evening, Saturday morning & afternoon, Sunday
     morning)

ü    Complete final assignment, due Friday, may 16, 2008

Final Assignment: 
Submit a copy of your local’s GOTV/Member Engagement Action plan* and a 1500-2000 word final paper+ that summarizes the techniques and strategies covered in the sessions attended and how these experiences with be utilized in your own local to help build strong association teams:

 

§         Suggested topics:

    • What, in your opinion, constitutes an effective local? 
    • In your local, how do you communicate with and engage new members?
    •  What have you learned at this conference that will help you motivate and develop emerging leaders, i.e. how will you increase the effectiveness of your all volunteer association, build capacity?
    • Who are the key players and stakeholders in or connected to your local or your community (coalition building)? 
    • What issues and concerns within the education environment have been addressed and/or need to be addressed to reach out and engage members? The community?
    •  Of the mini-sessions you attended on Friday evening, what did you learn that will assist you in accomplishing your local’s goals?
    • What strategies will your local need to use in order to effectively communicate with members, educate members and engage them politically
    • Describe what personal skills you gained and/or what experiences during the leadership training improved your role as a local leader and will help you “take charge”. In your role as a leader, what components of the training were specifically helpful and/or what could have been more helpful?

*Local Plan:  Submit a copy of your local’s action plan to educate, organize and activate to Get Out The Vote for 2008 or the product that was developed during the April Leadership conference.  Indicate when your plan was or will be adopted, how you participated in its development, and by whom it was or will be approved.  Action plans can be for membership recruitment/engagement or may focus on local and/or state political engagement. +Final Paper: 

Submit your responses to any of the above suggested outlined in a 1500-2000

word paper.

 

NOTE:  Preferred method of submission is via email with standard word-processing documents attached.   Papers must be emailed (first.lastname@neaalaska.org) or mailed to the session trainer at their respective regional office.  They may also be faxed to the appropriate regional office.  (See NEA-Alaska Pocket Calendar for UniServ Director contact info, emails and fax numbers.)
