Elected officials have dramatic impact on the lives of public school employees
Political decisions affect every citizen in our state, and it is up to each of us to play a role in deciding who makes those decisions. During local elections, important offices are filled on school boards, borough assemblies, city councils and mayors of local communities. These elected officials have dramatic impact on the lives of public school employees. From voting on contracts, to setting mill rates for local taxes, to deciding additional resources for K-12 education, these elections set the stage for all citizens in Alaska.
The NEA-Alaska Political Action Committee for Education (PACE) takes center stage in dealing with politics in Juneau and Washington DC. The 57-member PACE committee is made up of the 30 members on the NEA-Alaska Board of Directors coupled with 27 additional members who are elected by their regional caucuses each January during Delegate Assembly.
Members of PACE do much more than come to meetings, vote on contributions to candidates, and occasionally do direct lobbying in Juneau. Over the years, we have learned that the biggest part of our lobbying effort takes place at home. PACE members stay in touch with regular updates of activities and the need for specific messaging needed through our emailed Legislative Updates. To sign up receive the Updates, click here. The NEA-Alaska PACE committee meets a minimum of once a year in odd numbered years and at least three times during election years to decide on recommendations for office, budget planning, questionnaire development, legislative updates and research.
NEA-Alaska PACE is an exciting way for members to be involved in assisting the association through the democratic process and electing the best candidates for K-12 education to all offices in Alaska.
