About Us

We are NEA-Alaska

NEA-Alaska is a diverse organization of teachers and other certificated staff, education support professionals (ESPs), retired members, and students training to become teachers.

Certificated members, who make up approximately three-quarters of our membership, include teachers, school nurses, librarians, counselors, psychologists, physical and speech therapists, and coaches. Education support professionals include school secretaries, custodians, classroom aides, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers, and other support employees. NEA-Alaska/Retired has more than 1,300 members.

NEA-Alaska employs 26 full-time staff based in offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.

Affiliates

Some 67 local associations in virtually every school district in the state are affiliated with NEA-Alaska. In turn, our organization is a state affiliate of the 3.2 million-member National Education Association (NEA), headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Governance

NEA-Alaska is a representative, grass roots democratic organization in which all policy, budgetary, and goal decisions are member-driven. The Delegate Assembly of nearly 400 members meets each January and is NEA-Alaska’s top policy-making body. Members elect the president, vice-president, NEA Delegate and 23 regional directors on the board of directors. The board meets six times a year to administer policies set by the Delegate Assembly.
